There’s a dirty little secret getting out in fast-paced retail industries about anti-virus software on their embedded devices – it slows down point of sale machines. In Japanese markets where speed reigns supreme - retail stores are made (or broken) based on how quickly they can service their customers during checkout. This has forced all the checkout clerks to learn to type extremely fast. Based on a detailed analysis from our Japanese customers, some retail branches were performing better than others. The results showed that the anti-virus software on the checkout systems would often slow down the programs. This slowdown, often imperceptible, was just enough to ignore some keystrokes of fast typists. This led to billing errors, which led to a longer service time, and ultimately lost business. Enter Solidcore and Say Goodbye to Anti-Virus Solidcore's S3 Control Embedded software is a small footprint, low-overhead change control solution that enables OEMs to secure and control embedded devices. The software installs quickly and easily on devices to enforce the OEM's software change policy, and provides proactive protection against unauthorized changes. It provides zero-day security protection by ensuring only authorized software can run on the embedded device – eliminating the need to run "performance-draining" anti-virus software applications. Using such technology has apparently caught on, as Solidcore's S3 Control Embedded is being used in: - 40% of all ATMs in Germany by the end of 2008.
- Japan where all new printers, point-of-sale machines.
- BSQUARE OEMed products.
